WHAT LEVEL SHOULD I BE IN?
Please read the following guide to make sure you
are entering the course best suited to
you.
Salsa - Beginners This level is for people who are
either new to salsa or not proficient with the requirements for
Intermediate 1 (see below). You may have already completed the Beginners
course but are not able to dance these moves comfortably and still keep
time. In this case it is better to repeat Beginners.
Salsa – Intermediate 1 In order to enter this
class you need to have mastered the forward and back basic step, side
basic, behind step, salsa timing, some turns such as forward turn,
Bamboleo, wrap-in turn. You should also have been introduced to the Cross
Body Lead. If you are not sure if you’re ready for this level you may be
better to repeat Beginners. It’s better to take a bit longer and make sure
you get the basics right or it will be hard to break bad habits later and
you may hold up other students. We recommend that students attend this
course twice before entering Intermediate Level 2. The second time you do
it will be with a teachers with many different moves.
Salsa – Intermediate 2 To enter this level
you should be proficient with cross body leads and a number cross body
turn combinations and a good assortment of other turn patterns. You should
also have quite good timing. You will have already been dancing salsa for
a minimum of 4 months – preferably more for most people. We have a large
repertoire of moves and material for this level and it is recommended that
you do this level at least four times before entering Advanced. Each time
you do the course the moves will be different and you won’t have the same
teachers in consecutive terms. Our salsa classes focus
more on the linear salsa styles (e.g. L.A., New York, Puerto Rican,
London, etc).
Salsa – Advanced This level is not for the
faint-hearted! It really is ADVANCED. You should already be able to
comfortably manage relatively fast double spins (ladies). Men should
already have an impressive repertoire of moves (from LA, New York and
Cuban styles). Your style should be smooth and your timing should be very
good. If you are still struggling with timing you definitely need to
attend a lower level (preferably Intermediate level 1) or see us about
private lessons to get it sorted out. Also if you have an injury or
problem, which prevents you from being able to physically execute advanced
moves, then this is not the level for you. With the amount of advanced
material we have you could do this course many times and still keep
learning new steps and turns as well as improving your style. Note: There
are lots of excellent moves and material in Intermediate level 1 and 2. We
recommend that you do Intermediate 1 at least twice & Intermediate 2
at least four times.
Rueda – Level 1 (Beginners) In order to begin rueda you must
have danced and attended regular (weekly) salsa classes for a minimum of
several months. You must have good salsa timing. (Salsa – Intermediate 2)
Rueda – Other Levels Check our rueda syllabus to
see whether you have mastered the moves in a particular level. Once you
have completed level 1 you may go straight on to either level 2 or level
3. Once you have completed levels 1, 2 and 3 you may go on to level 4, 5
or 6. When you have completed 4, 5 and 6 you can go on to levels 7, 8 or
9. When you have completed 7, 8 and 9, please talk to us about becoming a
teacher yourself!
Everyone! It is very important to realise that
it’s not how much you have learnt but how well you do what you have
learnt. Dancing a whole song to relatively basic steps but doing it well
is infinitely better and enjoyable for your partner than dancing lots of
un-mastered moves, out of time or with a bad style! We really want you to
get the most from these classes. We also don’t want to disadvantage other
students by allowing people to enter a course that they are not ready for.
So be warned! If we think you are not suited for the level you are in we
will ask you to switch to the appropriate level.
ENJOY!!!
From the teachers!
